Visiting a Nubian Village with Sahra Saeeda's JtE 4, Aswan in Upper Egypt, summer '09. Taking a boat ride across the Nile, I believe we we're already behind the first dam at this point. Interesting to note is that in constructing the high dam of egypt in the 70's, flooding thousands of acres, is wasn't only the original sites of many of the most famous temples and monuments that been lost (several of them painstakingly re-located & rebuilt with precision accuracy on higher grounds). But also scores of Nubian Villages were lost. Many nubians relocated in well populated areas, losing ties to their cultural heritage while assimilating into their new environment. Fortunately, some nubians stayed in Nubia, the southernmost area of Upper Egypt, rebuilting and keeping their language & ancient heritage in tact. Here we were invited into a nubian household, and walked through the village, meeting the warmest smiles and friendly people.
