PART 1.... Hey yall. In this video i'm doing a teardown and rebuild of a Briggs and Stratton Power Built 12.5 HP Flathead Model 28 Lawn Mower engine. Hope this series helps you, be sure to watch the other parts. And the last part is the first start of this motor after being rebuilt (not a complete break in video, just the first few minutes of running and adjusting carburetor) The only thing i left out was checking the ring gap clearance, which all you do is put a new ring in the cylinder use the piston to push it down about a half inch or so and use a feeler gauge to check the gap on the ring. Use general safety rules when doing anything like this, it is extremely to cut/smash fingers at any point. I cut my thumb really bad on the timing gear on the crankshaft (off camera). Just be careful and use common sense. Thanks for watching

  • Ummm all Power Built Briggs are cast iron sleeves. That's one of the high points of the engine. One thing they built it with for extended life.

  • @LaPavoniMac i know now, i was told that the power built series was cool bore, aluminum bore, and this was my first power built, which really to be honest its no different from a I/C, same block, with cast iron sleeve, same carburetor and camshaft, everything is the same. thanks for watching!

  • K I will take that advice and a rod out the side would suck hahahahah

  • @bigborekit12 there good motors haha yeah it ain't no fun haha

  • Do these motors last long and if not what would I have to replace

  • @bigborekit12 yeah they last for quite a long time if they are taken care of (oil should be changed at least once each year, preferably twice a year) and clean air filter, and it should last a long time, what usually wears out is the rings in theses, and they start smoking (burning oil) and they would have to be rebuilt like i did in this 4 part video. and if you bypass the governor so it revs high it will throw a rod out the side haha thanks for watching

  • @LaPavoniMac all power built briggs don't have cast iron sleevs.. the 11hp is just aluminium bore.

  • @Joe43ka7 does it make a clanging noise, like metal hitting metal when it stops turning? if so you probally threw a rod. just follow this video series and it should help you alot. i don't go into replacing the rod, but it shows complete tear down, and should help alot. thanks for watching

  • Hey thks fnaguitarplayer9, mine 12.5 hp motor just went on the weekend, just finished using it, shut it down no problem( beer break hehe) than I went to restart it,only moved about 90 degrees, couldn't make a complete turn of the crankshaft with my hand.So i'm guessing hopefully their isn't damaged. After watching your video it gave me the confindence to try attempt to fix her up
