This provisional cast-on on uses waste yarn, and is similar in execution and result to the Italian Tubular cast-on. In fact, they are the same thing!

I actually don't think this is like the Italian tubular cast-on. With the Italian cast on as I understand it, you use two working yarns and cast on a 'fold', or two interlocking rows of knitting whose active loops both point in the same direction. Knitting from the italian cast on leaves a fold at the base, where the knitting does a 'U-turn'. Here, the waste yarn simply catches the bottom loops of a normal row of knitting - they point downwards and there's no U-turn.

The two are exactly the same, other than one uses waste yarn and the other does not, and they are executed in different manners. The results are identical, they are simple used in different ways. Please look again at both videos, note the resulting cast-ons.

its not like the italian cast on at all, the italian one has a fold, most store bought patterns have one like that too. you just made a provisional cast on that can be turned into any bind off you want, you could add an italian bind off though (which you would graft to close)

If you actually do this and knit it, it IS the same as an Italian Tubular cast on. Trust me on this, it is. ;-) It creates the fold, everything.

Hi. I'm writing a knitting pattern that uses a provisional cast-on. Would you mind if I link to this video in my pattern? This video is how I learned how to do it.

Sorry it has taken me a few days to rely, I've been out of town visiting family. But yes, I would be delighted to let you link to my video in your pattern. As long as I am credited - which I believe I would be as soon as they go to my video - then I a always happy and flattered to agree. Thanks for thinking of me!

Whoever did this, did a great job. I hear everything, see everything. You don't talk too much in the beginning, you get right to it so I don't have to wait to see how to do it. You use bright red yarn to differentiate, your voice is pleasant and easily understood, camera angle just right, you don't go too slow or fast, and its just perfect. Thank you for the contribution! I have learned to knit from uTube videos.

Like other commenters, I cannot stress enough how much I love your down-to-business video. It's a peeve of mine when I'm watching other knitting technique videos and there's two minutes of talking before a single stitch is made.

This is an excellent tutorial, the best I have found on here - clear demonstration, the wool colours are clear, and thank goodness, you also show what to do to graft on afterwards.

I'm making the italian cast on for ages now, and it is different

except maybe we don't understand the same cast on as THE italian cast on (?)

Thanks for making this video! I watched two or three others and looked at lots of instructions before finding this and finally figuring out how to do the cast on. ;)

I have tried both this method of cast on and crochet cast on and when i begin to knit from the row of the provisional cast on the stitches form twists so the entire row looks distorted. I wonder if you know what I am talking about and is there a way to rectify it?
