What happened to Clark Gable after the death of Carole Lombard in January 1942?
Many say that Clark was never the same. In honor of Carole, he volunteered for the Army Air Corps in August of that year, rising to the rank of Captain and earning the Distinguished Flying Cross. He was discharged in 1945. Visibly aged, he returned to the screen that year to much fanfare. He continued making films through the late 1940's, but his career never regained its previous status. In 1949, he married Lady Sylvia Ashley, but the marriage was ill fated. They divorced in 1952. In 1954, he parted ways with MGM, his home studio for over twenty years. Around that time, he reconnected with a former flame, Kay Williams. They married in 1955. Finally content in his personal life, he continued making films through the late 1950's. His final film appearance was in the drama The Misfits, costarring Marilyn Monroe (also her final film appearance). Clark died of a heart attack at a Los Angeles hospital on November 16, 1960, ten days after filming was completed. He was 59 years old. He was laid to rest next to Carole in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Kay gave birth to his only son at the same hospital four months later.

  • can i ask what the context of the clip at 1:15, after 'Gable's back and Garsons got him' because everytime a watch this video and i see that clip it just fits so perfectly.

And by the way I love this video. Excellent job :)

  • That is a scene from "Adventure" with Greer Garson. Clark and Greer are arguing and she tries to run away from him. He grabs her back and he says to her, "I picked on you to talk to when it was the ocean in your eyes that done it. I never saw it in no eyes before. I'll call it a day too. I'm sick to death of you!"

  • clark must really loved carol... what a sad ending for their love...

  • Tho CG & CL's romance is famous. CG was an ironic dichotomy of romantic lover & serial cheater. Rose 2 top by providing stud serv. & marrying older women, cheated on almost every woman he was w/ (Just w/ Wife2: left her 4 CL AFTER he had illegitimate child w/ Loretta Young, tho W2 paid 4 his Hollywood debut). No doubt CG loved CL in his own way & grieved deeply over her death, but if CL hadn't died would he have ended up w/ Lana Turner? CL rushed home on a plane, not train b/c of that fear. Sad.

  • I don't like this MUSIC....it's out of TIME for HIM....

  • Clark Gable had more talent as an actor than he gave himself credit for. He was hugely attractive to women and vice versa. But he was also a deeply flawed individual who cheated on all of his wives routinely. And even alcohol couldn't console him or let him forget what he did.

  • Love your dipiction of their life together and Clark's life following her death! It was so sad that clark lost the love of his life!

  • This video gave me goosebumps.

  • I am girl in my thirties watched a lot movies.Love a lot of famous movie men,But,.No one,no man can compare to Clark Gable..He is Beyond Handsome with Sophistication,he is pure natural with class..

  • Just studied the accident for nearly 20 years. Since that time I have also researched the life of Carole Lombard. I don't have a book out about the accident, but I do have a website that has profiled the accident at Lostflights.

  • @canyonair what's your fascination with the site?

  • I have climbed the mountain that her plane crashed into..7 times. A very sad place.

  • I've seen the mountain that her plane crash into. Sad.
