Soft shelled turtles require a bit more care than hard shelled turtles, because of the soft nature of their shells they are more prone to abrasions from sharp object and therefore more prone to infection.
The males grow to around 9" long and the females up to 18" long, it's virtually impossible to determine the sexes until they are bigger.
Juveniles can be fed on bloodworms, and later on with pellets, prawn, white river shrimp and krill.
The environment must have sand not stones on the bottom as they like to bury themselves when threatened or frightened. The setup must include a heater(mid 20's) and an internal filter, with places to hide i.e. greenery and a basking area. They can be aggressive to other smaller soft shells but are ok with other breeds.

  • how big do they get?

  • @drunkenp0t

Males can grow to 9 inches shell length and females up to 18 inches shell length !!!

  • Yea they're cute when they're, but these turtles grow up and turn into vicious man eaters.

  • @Montyextreme ......If you hand feed them like i do they become quite tame and a lot less agressive than you would expect them to be, of course like any turtle when feeding they can sometimes 'miss' the food and give you a nip instead......i don't have any problems feeding any of my turtles but you have to be pretty dedicated to own and care for turtles like these.

  • she needs a place out of the water

  • A basking area is in the tank, you just can't see it in the video, all my turtles have basking areas, you can visit my site at, stevesturtlepage for info on my setups.

  • Hello there! I just adopted a soft shelled turtle like yours! My dad gave it to me and told me that one of our waiters found it. I currently have a hard shelled turtle in a big aquarium so I placed the new soft shelled turtle with him. I have no idea how to take care of the newbie. Will they fight? They are of the same size although my hard shelled is quite "lumpy" if you know what I mean :) Please help me :( I want them both to be good friends :D
