gotta love these buses Eh?, been a bus driver for years. 2 imprezas, 1 justy, and just got my second wrx.

I had the exact same problem and found a piece of debris in the oil control solenoid keeping the solenoid wide open. The oil control solenoid on the 2.5L DOHC engines controls the variable valve timing. Pulled the solenoid (took five minutes) it was stuck open remove debris and walla ran better than it ever has.

i have a 97 legacy 2.5 gt,, and it has a misfire allso.. cyl 2 and 4.. but runs ok,, just idle is rough ,, i think mine might be a burnt valve.. i had a exhaust leak right where the pipe goes into the head. i plan to replace the motor one day.

Sry that happened to your scooby.
excuse my ignorance, but how exactly can you tell your motor is misfiring ? whats the noise I should be looking for ?

@reita357
Firstly, the car was throwing a CEL (check engine light) code for misfiring on cylinder 2 & 4. Still to this day, I have no idea what the noise was. You can tell the motor misfires as it runs very, VERY rough.

@bluefox4848 ah ok. Thanks for the reply. I can feel your pain, I myself have had a EJ257 with pistons 3 & 4 shit themselves. Now I'm running a EJ207 and its happy days

@reita357 Yeah, I pretty much was worn out trying to find out what was wrong with it, so I ended up replacing the engine with another used engine. That engine was crap (that's what happens when you buy an internet engine sometimes), and had to rebuild it myself. I had the heads redone, then reassembled the engine. Since then, it's been running strong for the past 30,000 miles.

Valve tining skipped a tooth. While it's opened up, check for any services running off the belt eg worn water pump bearing or idler pullies. Replace worn parts and belt and set timing marks. If belt skipped on an interferance engine - there could be valve damage due to piston and valve collision

@isoarcars. On Subaru motors, the timing belt can skip up to 3 teeth before any interference or damage occurs. This motor was eventually swapped, but the old motor (in the video) was torn down as well, and the cause of the issue has still not been found.
