"Doctor Finlay" is a British television series based on A.J. Cronin's stories about the fictional hero, Dr. Finlay. It is a follow-up to "Dr. Finlay's Casebook," the successful BBC series. This show picks up the story in the days immediately following World War II. Dr Finlay returns to the practice at Arden House in Tannochbrae at a time when the National Health Service is about to be instituted.The show stars David Rintoul as Dr. Finlay, Ian Bannen as his semi-retired practice partner, Dr. Cameron, and Annette Crosbie as his housekeeper, Janet. Other central characters include Finlay's assistant, Dr. Neil, played by Jason Flemyng and Finlay's new partner, Dr. Napier, played by Jessica Turner. The series was a Scottish Television production that was filmed in Auchtermuchty, Fife, Scotland. It aired in the U.S. on PBS' "Masterpiece Theatre."

Smallpox has been brought to Scotland, and like other communities Tannochbrae has to organise a mass vaccination programme, putting a great strain on local medical staff. A long-running case of anaemia poses problems for both the sufferer's husband and for Dr. Neil. Brenda's fiancé is flying home to be demobbed, leaving her with a major decision to make.
