actually they don't smile because of tradition. Back in the older ages it was illegal for Irish to do anything that was deamed "fun" so they would dance and keep straight faces so they wouldn't get in trouble ( at least that is what I heard) ill have to research it some.)
It could be because they get so close together at points that swinging the arms around might knock those next to them off balance, and besides, they're probably trying to get you to watch the feet more than the arms. Being I guess an older performance, they're too busy trying to concentrate on what they're doing to smile. A lot of people do that. But, who knows.^^
Michael Flatley or not, that dance is sooo technically difficult and physically exhausting you have to give credit to anyone and all of the dancers who performed it and shut the hell up with the negative comments unless you can do better.
its horrible that river dance and micheal flatley parted company but to say its the worst performance ever is lying they are all good at what they do and if you want to support micheal flatley go to his work insted off dissing riverdancers just trying to make a living like everybody else
