H.M.S. Cavalier 65th Anniversary and 10 years at the historic Dockyard Chatham. before the move she was at South Tyneside dock from 1972 to may 1999 South Tyneside Council originally bought the ship and docked it at Hebburn, intending that it would be the centre of attraction for a maritime visitor centre. The scheme never got off the ground and after an attempt to get cash from the Heritage Lottery Fund failed, the council abandoned the project. in1970s and 80s untill 1999 she was sold to Historic Dockyard at Chatham for a fee of just £1 pound she had 24 hour window .Faced with either being scrapped or sold overseas her ex-crew led a successful campaign to preserve her. Helped with a major grant from the National Heritage Memorial Fund, HMS Cavalier was towed to Chatham's Historic Dockyard and placed in the famous Number Two Dry Dock, the site from which Nelson's Flagship, HMS Victory was launched from The HMS Cavalier Association along with other individuals then mounted a campaign to save the ship as a memorial to all destroyermen lost in the Battle of the Atlantic and Russian Convoys during World War 2.
