Jacob Appelbaum, Roger Dingledine: How governments have tried to block Tor

Iran blocked Tor handshakes using Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) in January 2011 and September 2011. Bluecoat tested out a Tor handshake filter in Syria in June 2011. China has been harvesting and blocking IP addresses for both public Tor relays and private Tor bridges for years.

I suppose tor is a good thing but dont like the part where they have been funded and created by the US Government and CIA and are still funded 80% by US Navy...

Amdocs develops, implements and manages software and services for business support systems, including billing, customer relationship management, and for operations support systems. If your phone company is AT&T, BT Group, Sprint, T-Mobile, Vodafone, Bell Canada, Telus, Rogers Communications, Telekom Austria, Cellcom, Comcast, DirecTV, Elisa Oyj, TeliaSonera or O2-Ireland, then Israel has access to much of your communications and bills, including credit cards numbers.

I'd like help out by running Tor as a relay node but it just wont work. I get an error message that leads me to a dead end. I consider myself pretty computer savvy, if I can't get it to work within half an hour, you've lost me.
