Daniel Auteuil (12-time César Award nominee for Best Actor), Emmanuelle Béart and Andre Dussolier star in this sublimely sensual, provocative and critically-acclaimed film. Camille (Béart), a concert violinist, becomes intrigued by her lover's business partner, Stephane, an aloof repairer of fine musical instruments. She interprets his distance as a sign of intellectual seduction, but Stephane is a social voyeur, incapable of emotional intimacy. The love triangle that develops reveals the complexity and imperfection of the three characters and their odd ménage-à-trois relationship.
I've often wondered what the starting-point was for this story. I suspect it might have been Ravel's music, and the story is a way of dramatizing elements of it. The film doesn't just use the music, but gives us a key to ways of listening to Ravel. The clockwork toys we see at the beginning - you could hardly find a better image for the pretty mechanics of some of Ravel's music.
