I never understood why he got very little attention in the otherwise excellent Ken Burns Jazz series
To me this is the pinnacle of jazz ,it hits the spot. It builds and builds comes together and falls apart perfectly . No one expresses mood like Mingus, this music is from the soul. I find his stuff more accessible than Ellington and less self indulgent than the long drawn out jams of so many other jazz artist. He says what he needs to say and leaves you wanting more.

i know this is from about a year ago, but i agree totally. it starts up slow and builds up to a huge climax, then it's gone immediately. this is absolute music.

Back in my highschool days, a friend gave me a tape. Side A was T-Bone Walker`s classic comet recordings including Stormy Monday Blues. Side B was this Mingus album, Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus. Isn't it a very happy encounter with both musicians? That friend said to me that I should play Side A soft and low and then Side B, loug enough to blow the ceiliing. Yes, I did!
