People seem way too gung ho bout taking supplements. I was going to post this in the comment area of another discussion, but thought it would benefit more by having its own thread. Do you think jeanne calment (Died age 122) even took 1 supplement in her entire life?? There are so many lifestyle adjustment besides supplementation that prolong life that you must be conscious of everything. Ms. Calment undoubtedly had good genetics- but her longevity almost certainly had so many other factors. Lets list a few things that seem to be so prudent in a longevity protocol:

1. REDUCTION OF STRESS
2. ADEQUANT SLEEP (7-9 hours of sound sleep)
3. REDUCTION OF ACTIVITIES THAT PLACE A STRESS ON A BODY
4. MAINTAINING AN OVERALL LEAN BODY WITH MUSCLE - BUT NOT TO EXCESS (on the contrary to what must people think- you want an overall lower level of hormones in the body- if you dont think that Jeanne Calments 4'11" high played any role in her longevity - you are kidding yourself - she probably produced less growth type hormones in her body we could usually dream about!) Some of the reasons why extreme caloric restriction seems dangerous is that if you did manage to get sick- what muscle reserve would you draw upon to fight the illness??
5. CLEAN SOURCE OF AIR AND WATER
6. SUNLIGHT (optimal) or VITAMIN D supplement for vibrational health (remember you don't get it from a pill though)
7. REDUCTION IN EXPOSURE TO ESTROGEN-LIKE TOXINS IN THE ENVIRONMENT AND FOOD
8. YOU PROBABLY WANT TO MINIMIZE EXPOSURE EXPOSURE TO POLYUNSTATURATES (most of the reason why people see such good results from omega 3s are that they are so messed up from higher omega 6 intakes and pro-inflammatory diets that they see immediate benefits from the anti-inflammatory actions of omega 3s. But let us not forget- if you optimized things in the first place- you don't want the extra oxidation that occurs with polyunsaturates- you can lower inflammation with other lifestyle and dietary adjustments.
9. LET US NOT FORGET THAT SOME LEVEL OF OXIDATION IS NECESSARY FOR PROPER SIGNALING IN THE BODY (worried about studies like the one on selenium? Its very possible that high levels of antioxidants in the body stop some of the proper signaling we need to keep the body in good working order - stop consuming mass amounts of them)
10. MAINTAINING PROPER GUT FLORA (its very simple - meat type products promote putrafactive bacteria - vegetables and fruits and the like promote fermentative bacteria- there may be benefits to meat consumption - but for now- it sould be minimized -or at least the diet should be supplemented with probiotics to shift the balance of gut flora to the proper types.
11. UNDERSTAND THAT WE REALLY DONT KNOW PRECISELY WHAT LEVELS OF MICRO AND MACRO NUTRIENTS ARE OPTIMAL FOR LONGEVITY PER SE (we know that we need vitamin and minerals for health - but at what amounts? It might be the case that certain slight deficiencies in some nutrients might lead to optimal longevity for the signaling response they send to our cells - at the same time are you willing to bet on the fact that an overabundance of nutrients is optimal for longevity (AND WASTE HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS ON THE SUPPLEMENTATION? I like to make the statement that its more important to understand the optimal ratios between the vitamins and minerals rather than in terms of absolute amounts.
12. TRY TO FIGURE OUT THE OPTIMAL MACRONUTRIENT RATIO - OR RATIO CYCLING THAT CAUSES OPTIMAL LONGEVITY (we still have to do some tweaking to determine optimal fat, carb, and protein intake, but i'll leave that to another discussion- it also has implications for my thoughts on optimal hormonal levels for longevity, which in some times less means better!)
13. REALIZE THAT THE TRUE BREAKTHROUGHS FOR LONGEVITY WILL COME THROUGH CELLULAR MANIPULATION (no need to say much here, just look to Aubrey de grey's work)
14. OPTIMAL EXERCISE PATTERN TO BRING ON CERTAIN TYPE OF BODY COMPOSITION WITHOUT EXCESSIVE OXIDATION (I usually default to a pattern like Art de vanys', excessive exercise is definitely counteractive to longevity)

I'm sure there is more I could say now, but i'm getting ready for the NEW YEAR! Hopefully, I can have time to follow this up with a good descussion on MACRONUTRIENT RATIOS.
