  • June was cute as apple pie and one of the great jazz singers of all time as well as one of the great big band vocalists of all time. From a very young age in Decatur, Illinois, she knew this was her destiny. She was that rare girl singer who had only marriage (to the famous Bob Cooper) and she had a darling daughter, Shay, who I saw in the wings at Arie Crown Theater in 1965 when she, Kenton and the Four Freshman drew sold-out audiences. For me a dream come true to see and hear in person.

  • muy bonitooooo

  • @local802blues Sure appreciate the year info! My music history channel of 550 playlists includes 111 lists for every year since 1900. Come take a step back in time . . . . . . .

  • The band is wailing ,June is cute and swingin' Gene is groovin; Stan and the guys are j having fun. This clip is just infectious ! What a cool scene and a swingin' ' great sound!

  • That brass section could really scream

  • Correct.. As you might know, Ray also played w/ Charlie Barnet's bop band in 1949 (Harry James said it was the best trumpet section he ever heard, as it also included Maynard and Doc Severinsen). Wetzel really had a way of being with bands when they hit their zenith (like being on WH's historic Apple Honey session on 1/45). His resume is outstanding, and is underrated due to his early demise.

  • Another sensational clip. June Christy and Stan Kenton at their very peaks. Thanks!

  • You are on the mark. I was ready to post the exact info

  • Stan Kenton & Ray Wetzel also sing on the longer 78rpm version. Its real title was

"I`ve been down in Texas" and it was recorded in 1946.Powerhouse trumpet man Ray who also played with Woody Herman,Neal Hefti & Tommy Dorsey was killed in a car crash in 1951 at the age of 27.
