@sphoneyyou are right, and I share your facination, its very interesting how the things we see as ovious now were not allways like that

@shariotoflove They made it more clear in interviews at the time this was aired, but yes - they did focus on the 'rich' food for exactly that reason. Poor people always starved or ate simple food (or, as they sometimes mention in banquets, they ate what was left over.) I don't think it's often meant as 'special occasion' food - it seems that for the richest, they would hold banquets all the time (I guess they didn't have a lot else to do!)

I think that beautiful French man could persuade me to eat anything.

@esteff22 Yep, they just didn't know. They knew alcoholic drinks didn't make them sick, but they didn't really know why... or maybe it was the other way around and they knew water made them sick and didn't know why.
We take knowing about germs and disease pretty much for granted these days, but they didn't know about germs and sterilisation and stuff for another 200 years.. or thereabouts.
Always crazy to me how things I was taught in first school would have been revolutionary at one time.

@Smallpotato1965 thats a good point. they do have a puritan meal on this, and its not too dissimilar to the sunday roast we have today. i suppose what the average folk ate back then wouldnt make great tv.

@shariotoflove The problem with this sort of show is that they use recipes from the time, but those recipes were for *special* dishes for *special* occasions. It would be as if they showed what 'those weird 21th century folks' ate by dishing up nothing but dishes by Heston Blumenthal as an example what everyone ate.

I've got to tell you, after watching 'Supersizers Go' and 'Supersizers Eat', I'm off meat forever.

@TheAnimalsbornfree have u ever seen what drain water looks like? That's how water from the river was then...ALL of it...boiling water wouldn't have been enough, as bigger particles would have stayed in the water anyways and its color would be the same...

to be honest, they did eat sallets in the 17th Century so i dont know why theyre not eating vegetables.
