  • you are very good, very very good. But music is not meant to be a competition...it is open to interpretation to anyone..there is no such thing as a RIGHT way to play it, my friend. However, i enjoy your interpretation the most.

  • @ChrisW21341 I agree, music is not (maybe sometimes it is) competition. However there IS righteness and wrongness in music. I didnn't want to show that i'm better than someone else. I just wanted to share something that I firmly believe is not to be ignored when playing this tune (that surprisingly isn't done by most), cause it was clearly stressed by Michael itself in great part of his music and guitar approach.

  • @job8: rightness and wrongness? familiar with concept of "interpretation"? been a musician for over 25 years and taught at conservatory for over 10. your concept of rightness and wrongness is...how should I say....misled. there IS no wrongness or right, there is only sloppy playing and what overshadows that is arrogance, which is the worst vice of all. it not only taints art but devalues creativity and the essence that is supposed to promote it.

  • @sehnsucht77 Been a musician, and a thinking being, for how long it's necessary to distinguish between "conscious interpretation" and "not completely understanding what i'm doing to the level of deepness the composer had, so i do it like this, not because i'm actually choosing to interpret it like this".

  • @job8 What do you teach to your students? That "put your soul and anything else in the music! Don't pay attention to critics and bat thoughts! Just be happy and bring that into your playing! Play with your heart"-like way of thinking? That would scare me.

  • Lets just say that AG is an introverted musician, and tends to play 100 times better in studio than he does on YouTube or on stage live etc... So what man? Have you heard his actual released recordings? They are ACE. I couldn't care less about whether his covers are played properly or not, predominently because I know his official recordings will be of the highest playing quality ;)

So in conclusion I see it as unecessary to make this vid either "for" or "against" him.

  • I don't know if it WOULD be unnecessary.

However, actually, my video was posted first, and his video was the first to be set as a response to mine.

He says music is not competition then acts as he intends it like this, writing in the end "in a duel you would lose horribly". He just acted as a loser, this was really unnecessary.

  • @ChrisW21341 Seriously think about it man. If you're playing at a piano competition you're going to try and play the piece as it was composed and meant to be played, not in your own way just because you want to. Sometimes people have to play a song properly as it was composed and sometimes people want to play a song as it was composed. He was just showing people how to play the song correctly.

  • @job8 Would you recommend Italy as a good place to live?

  • @job8 I agree with your interpretation of rightness and wrongness when it comes to Michael's songs. If you want to play them like he did you have to understand that a major factor is muting.

  • Andy's Cover is awesome too!! :D

  • Michael Hedges - Layover showed up on My Pandora playlist 5 days ago. I had to stop everything I was doing. I've been trolling youtube for everything Michael Hedges since then and glaring at my guitar for never sounding like that.

    anyway, great cover.

  • Almost making me cry. Like always.

Non vedo l'ora di ascoltarti dal vivo, magari qui dalle parti di Pisa.

  • @job8 I definitely admire your wish to stay as true to Michael as possible, thats super important when learning a piece. I could argue for a long time and use cliche little phrases about there is no rightness or wrongness in music but i think you understand what I meant when I said there's no wrong or right WAY to play a song..as long as it is a genuine interpretation...unless of course it is a shambles and disrespectful to the composer! Haha! Anyways, very well played.
