Millions of gallons of radioactive and chemically hazardous waste lurk in underground tanks at the Hanford Site in south central Washington State. Some tanks have leaked. Contamination has reached groundwater. It is critical to get the remaining waste out of these old tanks into newer, safer tanks, and eventually treat it for long term storage.
