On March 24, 2008, there was a loud bang in my aparment that shook the floors, walls, ceiling. I wasn't quite sure what it was, but then I noticed people outside looking and pointing in the direction of a smoldering building. As I watched the smoldering develop into flames, I grabbed my video camera and started recording. After filming for a bit, I set it up on a tripod and went outside to investigate.

There was already a large crowd gathering watching the house go down in flames. Wooden pieces of the roof framing were stuck high up in the branches of the trees, and a nearby building was showered in yellow bits of insulation. Firefighters, EMT, police officers, and news crew were quickly on the scene.

Later I spoke with Erin O'Halloran of CTV news and offered to send her bits of my footage. Some of this was shown on the evening news later that night. This footage isn't exactly what was sent to CTV, but is similar as I had about 35 min. of footage to select from but it was all from the same POV.

Later reports indicated that there were no injuries as a result of this incident. The owners of the home were away in Florida on vacation at the time.

  • Great job Ian! I was working on Rescue #1 out of the York St. Fire Station on Monday. We herd and felt the blast at the station. We started putting our gear on when the alarm went off for a Structure fire. Little did we know what we were about to encounter. Rescue #1 was first on scene. We worked extremely hard to save the 2 neighboring houses as they were starting to catch fire as we arrived. Thanks for the footage and kind words it is very appreciated.

  • Glad to see one of the FF's post here. I know everyone in the neighbourhood is thankful for the quick response.
