This was called "Staccato's Theme"- I had the 45 vinyl single.(purple Capitol label not yellow as in the video) It was the theme tune for the TV programme "Johnny Staccato". Very evocative of America and exotic sounding to us teens in mundane Wandsworth in the late 50s/early 60s. John Cassevetes was the star, and he went on to make a cinema verite', hand-held camera, b/w film of the 'beat generation' where the actors made it up as they went along. Can't recall the title. Anyone?

Of course "Staccato's Theme" came out in Britain in 1959. It was the theme to the TV series called "Johnny Staccato"- all in black and white of course. It was one of the examples of American modern jazz that I knew.(the other was "Take Five") and as I said earlier, my vinyl single had a mauve label-on Colombia I think. Can't recall the 'B' side though.

@albertanglo - make that CAPITOL! The 'B' side is "The Jazz At Waldo's".

VERY NICE TO see vinyl played. Round about the same period there was a serial on UK BBC TV called "The Killing Stones" about the diamond trade in South Africa, still with apartheid then. There was a very memorable signature tune that I learned to play on a penny whistle. I had the record of it on 78 by Elias and the Zig-Zag Jive Flutes.
Do you recall this too?

@albertanglo I'm afraid not. Even I am too young! I'm not sure if "Staccato" played in Britain when it first came out - but it did surface briefly as a classic series - sometime in the Eighties, I think.

Hi. Me Again. The John Cassevetes film was called "SHADOWS".
What happened to Mr Cassavetes after he went on to be in Polanski's "Rosmary"s Baby" ?

@albertanglo - John was an alcoholic. His liver eventually gave out in 1989, when he was only 59. But between Rosemary's Baby and then, he acted in and directed a number of movies (see his filmography on IMDb).
Oh, and this IS that purple-labled record! The yellow label shown is on ALL records on this channel (it was MUCH quicker to run the same video with all of the records!)
