Anne Hathaway cast as Catwoman

Actress Anne Hathaway has reportedly been cast as Catwoman in ''The Dark Knight Rises,'' director Christopher Nolan's third (and final) installment in his ''Batman'' movie series, which includes 2005's ''Batman Begins'' and 2008's ''The Dark Knight.''




In a press release this morning, Warner Bros. confirmed that Hathaway would star as Selina Kyle (aka Catwoman) in the movie.  Additionally, Nolan says actor Tom Hardy has been cast in ''The Dark Knight Rises'' as Bane, a villain that ''Entertainment Weekly'' describes as "a more recent addition to Batman's storied rogues gallery.  Most recently, Hardy starred alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in Nolan's 2010 thriller ''Inception.''


Anne Hathaway was among several well-known actresses who were rumored to be up for the Catwoman role.  At one point, ''USA Today'' says the list of potential stars included Keira Knightley, Katie Holmes, Naomi Watts and Jessica Biel.  In November of 2010, ''Deadline New York'' reported that Nolan was "lining up actresses" for potential parts in the film, including "two female lead roles" - one, a "love interest" for Bruce Wayne, another "a villain."  At that time, Hathaway was mentioned as a contender, along with Natalie Portman, Knightley, Watts and Rachel Weisz.


''The Dark Knight Rises'' is slated for release in U.S. theaters on July 20, 2012.  Actor Christian Bale will reprise his role as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Morgan Freeman returns as Lucius Fox and Gary Oldman will be back as Commissioner Jim Gordon. Michael Caine will also be back as Alfred.
