On the way from Neringa to Kaunas, We stopped at the Kaunas Fort Museum Holocaust Memorial. It is estimated that over 80,000 people were killed in this field by the Nazis. Both Jews and Lithuanians. This Fort was originally Kaunas' prison branch. In 1940, it became the NKVD Soviet prison from which political prisoners were sent to Soviet camps in Siberia and when the Nazis occupied Lithuania, the Fort became the area of mass murders.

The Museum itself had just closed for the day so the group spent a brief 20 minutes paying our respects to the dead and reading the plaques in their memory.

  • Not just german nazis who killed thousands but helped by lithuanians, ukranians, latvians and non communist russians.....only last year an elderly lithuanian was traced in UK who had taken part..no action taken !!!!

  • @macbrack04 It was very sad. There is no punishment great enough for those who took part. Thanks for commenting, Travels With Sheila

  • Oh I got the willies just watching this! What a horrible horrible place. Did they let you go inside? My mother and her family immigrated from Germany to the USA in 1940; I feel ashamed when I see reminders like this of what the Nazis did! I can't imagine what it felt like to be there, Sheila--I swear I could hear a little tremor in your voice. This video made me sad, angry, horrified..... and your music added to the ambiance! Scary stuff!! Thanks for sharing, as always.

  • It was difficult to keep from bursting into tears. The Russians were as bad as the Nazis. If they didn't kill you, they just sent you to Siberia. The Baltic States have had a horrible, tragic history.

  • Have you visited the museum of genocide victims in Vilnius? There you can not only see the exhibition, but actually FEEL the tragic history of Lithuania..

  • I haven't posted all the videos yet. Another 21 to go! We looked for it but only had one day in Vilnius that was definitely not enough time to see everything. By the time we got around to trying to find it, we were exhausted and gave up. Next time!
