Album - Shahenshah
Shams-ud-duha Badr-ud-duja
Duration - 11:04 mins

This qawwali is in the praise of Prophet Muhammad. Such type of qawwali is known as 'naat'.
Prophet is addressed by many titles, two of them are Shams-ud-duha and Badr-ud-duja.

Khuda ka noor tujh mein hoo bahoo hai
Khuda pinhaaN magar too ru-baroo hai
teri azmat ka andaaza ho kis ko
Khuda hai aur Khuda ke baad too hai

(the light of God is reflected in you
God is hidden but present are you
who can imagine your greatness; when
there is God and thereafter you )

Shams-ud-duha Badr-ud-duja teri badii tauqeer hai
surat teri shah-e-umam Allah ki tasveer hai

(sun of brightness, moon in darkenss you are revered greatly
O king of the people, your face is an image of God )

aisi surat teri kamli wale....

(O blanket draped one*, your face......)

Allah ne paas bula hi lia
bin dekhe Khuda bhi rah na saka

(eventually God called you to Him
even He could not resist seeing you)**

aisi surat teri kamli wale......

(O blanket draped one, your face......)

duniya se kya, roz-e-jaza unka hai mujhko aasraa
main hun ghulam-e-mustafa kaisi meri taqdeer hai

(what have I to do with the world when I have his refuge on the Day of Judgement
I am the slave of Mustafa***, how lucky I am !! )

Shams-ud-duha Badr-ud-duja teri badii tauqeer hai

(sun of brightness, moon in darkenss you are revered greatly)

* Prophet used to drape a black blanket on himself sometimes. Hence the salutation.

** Refers to the journey of Prophet to God, called as 'meraj' or the ascent.

*** Another name of Prophet Muhammad.

  • I am a Hindu South Indian Brahmin and thanks to my wife's family (they are Muslim), I got introduced to Sufi music, and then to Sahenshah. His music is truly proof that music knows no religion, caste, or boundaries.

  • LOVEly qawwali love it

  • Thank you for this 'Naat'. Nusrat ji is God's one of the best gifts to mankind.

  • he is the gr8 ustad ever to be born.....blessed are those who have seen him in flesh & blood....

salam and hi, the song is realy excelent, "chams ud doha" in arabic means "sun of the morning"; and "badr ud doja" means "the moon of the night"; i think it's about the prophet Mhammed (peace be upon him), because it"s he who has lighten all the worlds.

    my love.

  • accidently stumbled across this song; everytime i heard the artist sing the words shams-ud-duha it touched my heart even though i didnt know what it meant ; simply beautiful ty for the post and the translation 5/5
