They're not eco-terrorists if they're the ones trying to assist in the ecology's preservation.

The crew of the Ady Gil got what they deserved and got off easy. You don't take a carbon fiber speed boat nose to nose with hundred ton whaling ships. You're likely to loose you're life.
If one of them had died, there may have been more of an investigation but even then the Japanese would have been cleared. Given the actions they were taking, anything up to and including opening fire on the ship would have been justified. Maritime law is pretty clear on how hostile actions can be repelled.
