I just read a blurb on IMDB's Premium Member's RSS feed that it was only James Cameron's involvement in the Mote movie that fell through, due in part to scheduling conflicts with another big budget project, Avatar 2.
Apparently "Mote in God's Eye" is in development and slated for production starting late 2013.
Studio Execs say "Mote will be on the silver screen, come 'hell or high water,'" and rather than deviate from Niven and Pournelle's work, the studio has opted to produce a 3 part trilogy.
