I disagree, im haaka and when i go back to china any haaka family will speak to their children haaka and so the dialects will go through from generation to generation, a chinese persons main chinese dialect will always be the one they are grown to speak with their family with. In my case haaka and in fu jian for example the fu jian dialect.
the reason mandarin is on the rise is so that everyone in china will be able to communicate with each other no matter where theyre from

traditional chinese represents a story in each character.
and yes i agree with you, mando people shouldnt say "do you speak chinese" in mando cos it isnt the only chinese language
although there are many cantonese oversea, the population of mando is rising due to the immigrations from taiwan and mainland china
at least taiwan uses trad chinese

the ending consonants: K,M,P,T. Thus the remants of Middle CHinese do not exist in Middle Chinese. Also the history of Mandarin do not even hit 1200 yrs(I think 900 something because CANTONESE opera is that long). In centuries to come, "Chinese" will become more simpler than present-day Jap and Korean.. not to mention our new "simplified Chinese" *sigh*
