Bruce Jenkins 5

Bruce Jenkins is a professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Prior to this, he was the Stanley Cavell Curator at the Harvard Film Archive and served for many years as the Curator of Film and Video at the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis. His writings have appeared in numerous exhibition catalogues and in such publications as Artforum, October, Images, and Millennium Film Journal. He edited On the Camera Arts and Consecutive Matters: The Writings of Hollis Frampton (MIT, 2009) and recently authored Conical Intersect (Afterall, 2011), on the work of Gordon Matta-Clark. He has taught at the University of Minnesota, Macalester College, Harvard University, and the University of Cincinnati.

Professor Bruce Jenkins at School of the Art Institute of Chicago will give a talk on Conical Intersect on Saturday April 2nd:

"The Anarchitect: The Art of Gordon Matta-Clark"

Trained as an architect, the artist Gordon Matta-Clark (1943-1978) is a major figure in contemporary art whose Post-Minimalist practice involved elements of performance, installation, appropriation, and large-scale architectural intervention. This lecture focuses on Matta- Clark´s seminal Conical Intersect (1975), a spiraling "cut" into two derelict seventeenth-century Paris buildings adjacent to the construction site of the controversial new Centre Pompidou. Viewed three and a half decades later, Conical Intersect reveals the multivalent nature of the artist´s practice and his prescient focus on sustainability, creative reuse of the built environment, and the public role of art.
