Announced only a week ago, watch to see how Linux is making a real difference in underdeveloped nations. Learn more: http://one.laptop.org and http://fb.me/nixiepixel

In many countries around the world, technology is a luxury most cannot afford. One group is helping the situation through a program called OLPC - One Laptop Per Child. This program provides children, who would otherwise likely never see computers or other tech gadgets, with a cost-effective, rugged laptop powered by solar energy and running the free Fedora Linux distribution. These laptops have made an incredible impact on the lives and future of millions of children.

This program really speaks to me; it was a privilege for me to sit down with Marvell, makers of the processor & other chips found in the OLPC XO-3 tablet.

  • Yay fedora!

  • It's here at the philippines... They call it the XO laptop.. with free internet.. they give it to children who had to walk early in the morning, (before sunrise) down the hill and cross the river... this is really a big help thanks to P&G

  • @the_design_critics: It looks like some of you don't understand the purpose of the design and the user-interface: It is not about selling the tablet or replacing the cli, it is about making the tablet usable for young children.

  • Delixie Pixel ;9

  • @NinjaTTT To educate yourself on interface design and to learn why it's important, take a course on Human Computer Interaction, or read a few books like "Design of Everyday Things" or "The Inmates are Running the Asylum". You'll soon realize that design and development are very different, and adding more developers to the problem won't solve your design issues.

  • @NinjaTTT And that's where you are wrong. It's a common misconception among developers. They think they can do design, but in reality they can't (very few can). Good design does mean a more usable product and service. By denying it, I can tell that you don't know much about design and have never worked on a big project that's user-facing. The FB that Zuckerberg made is nothing like the FB we have today. CLI is good for programmers, I use CLI every day, I use Linux every day. *Most people don't.*

  • And I don't like this SUGAR desktop environment simply because it's moving away from improving existing desktop environment for different kind of usage...

  • @IDIEININIIS I just disagree that we need more designers! Designing does not mean a better quality or usability in product or service. Actually we need more programmers with ideas to put their heads together.. If Zuckerberg were not a programmer, there would be no FB etc... And for me,there is no better UI than CLI to do almost anything what GUI can't on my computer :) oh, and yes we still use CLI (at least in *nix world but in windoze it's not worth anything)

  • @NinjaTTT I'm not exactly sure what it is you're arguing. Simple GUI does not mean it is a user friendly GUI, one doesn't imply the other. If something gets the job done is no reason to stop improving it. If that was the case, we would all still be using command-line interfaces. This tablet doesn't need a more simple GUI, it needs a better GUI.
