One of the saddest songs ever written. Poor guy! This version is multitracked after the first verse: the dulcimer, voice and foot are in real time, but the extra guitars, harmonica, bass and vocals are overdubbed. Obviously.

  • Alonzo. I really liked Red River Valley.I that a dobro you are playing?. I also thought you did a fine job on Goodnite Irene.

  • That's an Appalachian dulcimer. Thank you for the compliments on both.

  • I have always loved this song. Great job. Not used to hearing that sub-dominant turn on the end of the first line. Where did you get that?

  • Good ears, good point there. I'm not sure where I got that, but it's from way, way back---in fact I've never in my life quite been sure which is the "proper" chard change there. Must've heard someone do it with the 4 chord in there and liked it!
