Subaru is working in partnership with the New York Power Authority and planning to test a pair of R1e electric cars this summer.

The R1e was developed jointly with Tokyo Electric Power, and the first running prototype was built nearly two years ago. The tiny two-seater features a quick-charge lithium-ion battery pack that provides a range of 50 miles, with a 54-horsepower electric motor enabling driving speeds of up to 65 mph.

  • This car goes way below the capabilities of current electric tech. 8 hour charge time? Is that for 120V? What are they using, lead acid batteries (not deep cycle)? No wonder it has a shit range too. What a crap electric made by a more than capable car company. Disappointing.

  • Talk about ignorant reporting. This reporter focuses on an 8 hour charge time but TOTALLY avoids comment on the fact the car runs nano tech batteries that I'm sure cost Subaru Millions to develop that can reach 80% of full charge within 10 mins.... and solve the exact problem this bloke says the car has.... that's disgraceful reporting!

  • i think its good because they are given them to governments which means they can suffer with it

  • I want an Electric!!

    Whats the prize again?

  • that front....its ugly even in the impreza's

  • I have subaru impreza. But this technology from Subaru is ..... Common Subaru you can do better.

  • Why not sell this car the US postal service? They only go 10-15 miles a day?

  • beef up the range

  • I tink the reason car manufacturers don't make good electric vehicles is that they're far more reliable and cheaper than gas vehicles. So, why invest in a technology that will give less benefits (to the car manufacturer of course) than gas technology, not to speak about selling spare parts. I think that the electric vehicle will not come from a traditional stablished motor company.

  • looks like a nice car wish i could have made the show.

did u see the lincvolt car neil young the singer is trying to build?i'm betting the possibility of a 100 mpg 1959 lincoln could be done.i thank neil young for putting his money time and life into this.

he needs our support as much as the world needs his right now i think.

    check out his car here
