Live coverage of Jeff Krosnoff's fatal crash during the 1996 Molson Indy Toronto.

On 92th lap of the Molson Indy Toronto CART race held on 14 July 1996 at Toronto street circuit, during a restart after a yellow flag, Adrian Fernandez and Alex Zanardi were battling for the lead of the scheduled 95-lap race when backmarkers Jeff Krosnoff in the Arciero Wells Racing's Reynard - Toyota and Stefan Johansson, who were fighting for 16th place, touched wheels on turn 3. Krosnoff's car was thrown into air, above the heads of marshals standing behind the concrete barriers lining the course, hit a lamp post and smashed the catch-fencing above the wall and spun, with pieces scattering across the course and the cockpit stopping against the opposite wall. Johansson, André Ribeiro and Emerson Fittipaldi were involved in the accident and finished in a runoff area at the end of the Lakeshore Boulevard.
A track marshal, Gary Avrin was hit by Krosnoff's car and died on the spot. Avrin, born in Toronto on 02 February 1952, was a resident of Calgary, Canada.
Another lady marshal, Barbara Johnston of Ypsilanti, Michigan, was seriously injured on head. Dr. Hugh Scully, the race's medical director, confirmed Jeff Krosnoff was taken to Toronto Hospital where he was pronounced dead about 30 minutes after the accident. He died of massive head and chest injuries, skeletal wounds and complete cardiac arrest.
The race, shortened to 92 laps after the accident, was won by Adrian Fernandez of Mexico, at his first CART success.
Jeff Krosnoff was the second Indy car driver to be killed in 1996, after Scott Brayton lost his life in a crash on 17 May 1996, during practice for the Indianapolis 500. And he was the second driver to die in CART history, after Jim Hickman lost his life at the Milwaukee Mile in 1982.
His memory is perpetuated today by the "Jeff Krosnoff Scholarship", established to help talented Californian students fund their university careers.

rember watching the race live and telling my dad that the car hit a Lady Marshall (which was sitting in the rail with a Pony Tail) but the news later on that day said that it was a man that got killed (Gary Avrin) is not until I saw multiple replays that I saw Barbara obscuring Gary from view that I realized there were two marshalls almost in the same spot and that Gary's hit caused the Suspension to break that possibly saved Barbara's life.
