Think we should hedge our bets on Carbon Sequestration (CCS)? I do!
Here's my pitch to COP17, as part of WGSI (Waterloo Global Science Initiative), on Enhanced Geothermal (EGS). It played to COP17 on Dec 9.
EGS can produce zero-carbon, baseload power in enormous quantities anywhere in the world.
The Challenge: Form an international consortium of public/private partners to build 10 commercial scale EGS demonstration plants. Cost? $1 billion - 3% of what gov's have committed to CCS.
The result: Have the EGS card to play in 5-10 years when we need to replace coal.

WGSI held the Equinox Summit: Energy 2030 at the Perimeter Institute in June 2011. A blueprint to carbon-free energy emerged. EGS is one of three recommendations for new, low-carbon baseload power.

  • @boumar19721972 Yeah that's how I felt about his blog post as well.

  • @MrJivePirate Have you seen the following video: /watch?v=Oscqx08zBXQ

  • @MrJivePirate He "assume" it's the same thing. I never assume and you know why because it makes an "ass" out of "u" and "me". ;-)

  • @boumar19721972 @boumar19721972 For primary information I found a BLM report titled "Newberry Volcano EGS Demonstration Project." For something more readable the best article I found was on ectroprobe titled "Geothermal Fractures Vs. Hydraulic Fracking: What’s The Difference?" The only opinion I found that said it was the same was an engineering student's blog who said "I took a fracing class and have never heard of shearing but I assume it's the same thing."

  • @MrJivePirate There is some information about environmental impacts but it's very hard to find because there's not a lot of impact. The only one I've heard about so far is seismic.See the establishment don't want to talk about renewable energies because they don't keep the workers(wage slave) working and capitalism would come crashing down!

  • @boumar19721972 I'm looking for some more information on the environmental impact of enhanced geothermal can you point me in the right direction?

  • @mabethebabe50 To answer your question, yes it is similar but deeper so you don't screw with the water tables.

  • Thanks for the great video Tom, one question, is 'Enhanced Geothermal' the same as 'hydro fracking'? Thanks if you can clarify.
