also from MPLAYER FAQ(5.5):

"MPlayer does not work on Mac OS versions before 10, but should compile out-of-the-box on Mac OS X 10.2 and up. The preferred compiler is the Apple version of GCC 3.x or later". now we are at 10.7, if you install xcode(for free) you have last ver. of Gcc too, and can compile sw from terminal,there is already a precompiled version, but you can compile the last svn too,if you need screenshot i can pm you.

mate , actually the kernel contain most part from bsd, anyway, yes you can port any software, but need to install extra library, i did it by myself,this make the OS heavier,but there not need anyway,osx have already many sw, bout mplayer, there is already an osx version, install osx in vmware and go to mplayer s website, there is already a dmg, to download, try it, and there is a package for windows too, i use it sometime, is a good player.

@DarkS3phiroth17 Actually, Mac OS X is not that based on BSD. It's based on NextSTEP, the firm Steve Jobs founded when he was fired from its own company. NS has some parts of FreeBSD in it. But still OS comply to the "old" UNIX03 spec.

But that doesn't automatically allow "to compile any sw for unix".

You also said "mplayer works on mac and windows without recompil[ing]". You should do some research about that. It's not possible because MPlayer is written in C and is differently packaged.
