  • Wow, I discovered this just today and I am STUNNED. It is so beautiful and rich, I haven't heard anything this beautiful in a long time!!! Thankyou so much for posting!

  • @boyamichicken

Thank you. She is a joy to post and heaven to listen to.

  • If you are a music lover and listening to that doesn't transport you directly to Heaven, then you're probably dead inside. IMHO, this is some of the most beautiful singing ever captured on a recording.

  • @Archimusik

Thank you, Archimusik, you will get no disagreement from me. She owns this. It is almost worn out from years of playing it.

  • Regarding the comment from JRTRMISH that Sills had pitch problems, I think the problem is with this old crow's ears. No piano, violin, or singer is or can be perfectly in tune. As with "perfect pitch' it doesn't exist. There is a margin of acceptable pitch which I refer to as the "pitch envelope" or tolerable harmonizing against pitches coming before and after and other concurrent pitches.

  • Thank you, ChesapeakeReview, for your very insightful comments. I must admit I have never found a problem with Miss Sills' pitch, ever. And I own and listen to a huge amount of her recordings. I find her true as a die. Of course, I was always a tremendous fan. I think she was exquisite. C.

  • Countertenorbuff is so correct. If anyone were to ever question the abilities of Beverly Sills the phrase she sings between 5:06 - 5:22 says it all. Total control musically, technically and tonally, absolutely heavenly!

  • Absolutely stunning!! Such beautiful high notes!! Her grace is amazing! :)

  • @ChesapeakeReview Sills had no pitch problems compared to Caballe and Sutherland!

  • One of my fave all time sopranos. A remarkable Maritta! One of the most intelligent singers of all time: remarkable control, phrasing and instrument. RIP Miss Sills. What a legacy.

  • This is wonderful but I prefer Lotte Lehmann and Richard Taruber

  • @galehout AAH! Beverly will always be my first and only love!! Sheer vocal excitement at it best!!

  • I can"t believe what I"m reading here, "perfect pitch" and, oh yes "pitch envelope". People this is not science this is art period. It cannot be manufactured or created in a laboratory test tube.It is a part of who you are. Ms.Sills unique interpretation of "Marietta"s Lied" happens only once in a career life time. I apreciate all Divas who have gone before and those who have come after Ms.Sills; however credit must be acknowledge where it is due. M.D.Tucker

  • Marietta"s Lied sung by Ms.Beverly Sills is perfection. Ms. Sills has set a standard that over the years no other diva has come close to . When I first heard Ms.Sills sing this many years ago, I was simply moved to tears. Her phrasing, perfect; tempo, perfect; emotion and passion, perfect. Perfection is rare for any artist to atain in any performance. I thank God for Beverly Sills .

  • Without question Beverly Sills performance is the best I"ve ever heard; having purchase this recording more than 30yrs. ago. It will probably be the best performance ever. M.D.Tucker

  • One of the top 5 voices of the 20th century and I would argue, one of the greatest voices ever. Here live performances were absolutely thrilling.

Imagine what a girl from Brooklyn can do.

  • I know the name belongs to Callas, but when listening to Ms Sills singing this aria there can be only ONE La Divina! Bravissima!
