I just tried this on a cake I'm making and it lifted the icing off everywhere (I'm using the foam roller; not the "fluffy" one with nap). How stiff is your icing & what recipe do you use?

I put my cake in the fridge for approx 15-20 minutes to setup before I roll on the cake and have never had any issues with it!

@FluffyGrl I use a crusting buttercream icing recipe that is half butter and half shortening. The most important thing is that you are using an icing that crusts and you will know if it gets crusty as it sets up....My icing is not stiff since I use it to ice my cakes, being too stiff would make it very difficult. Make sure that you are putting your cake into the fridge long enough to setup, if the icing is coming off on the roller the icing is not setup and needs to go back into the fridge.

Is that a sponge brush? I am surprised the sponge impression don't show. Do you ever use the paper towel method? You have a very interesting technique.

It is a foam material and never leaves any impressions...yes I do the paper towl method at times but this seems to work better for me at times!
