I would be on cloud 9 if Scorsese decided to make a western. I don't want him to do it just to do it, and if he doesn't ever do it that 's probably because he didn'tever have one he felt he needed to make. But I think we're all curious what a Scorsese western would be. And I hope we get one.

ryanfoley123: agreed, his love for Westerns really shows - it's odd he never tried. What's holding him back??

I mean, if you think about it, he could get any writer he wants to write him a great western, so I don't know, he must have some reason for not doing it.

A good question. Maybe his love for Westerns makes him think he can't improve on what he's seen.

I think history shows us that you can improve on anything if you're up to it! But it's his choice, he's done so much else anyway.

Interestingly enough, I was just leafing through McMurty's "Lonesome Dove" and was idly wondering how Scorsese's version of this might've looked.

I've heard of that book but I haven't read it - I hear it's closer to the reality of life in the Old West?
For some reason I'm imagining a Western by Scorsese would be pretty similar to Gangs of New York - but Gangs of the Old West, if you see what I mean.

Yes but, given the sort of Westerns Scorsese liked (e.g. "Duel In The Sun"), I sometimes wonder if his own type of Western would take a similar approach? As for "Lonesome Dove", it earned the Pulitzer for McMurty (and the 1989 miniseries adapted from it did rather well). Not only do I consider it a good read, but McMurty pretty much captured the original feel of the Old West. I'd recommend it.
