San Diego was the first point in the US to be subjected to the tsunami (hence it would receive the largest waves). A friend of mine visiting from out of town decided to brave the storm and check it out. We were doubtful that we'd see anything at all, but decided to head to Point Loma, a spit of land that extends furthest out into the ocean and overlooks San Diego. From our comfortable and scenic perch about 300ft above sea level, this video shows what we saw before and during the tsunami. We later checked the times with the ranger station, so what we saw coincided time-wise with the tsunami event. Fortunately, San Diego was spared. My commiserations to the victims of this latest earthquake in Chile.

  • Hi Steve, iReceived the link from Dale's Facebook post. That was a cool vantage point that you chose. iLove Cabrillo! iKnow it was anticlimactic but iWas just glad that all of San Diego was spared!

    ...lovingly, tammy

  • Hi Tammy,

Yes, we were all relieved it wasn't a big deal... For me it was just nice to get out and show my friend some of San Diego. The "show" was an unexpected bonus.

  • Not sure I understand your question but here are possible answers.

    1. I did shoot it in HD so whatever the aspect ratio was for that (1280 x 1080), that's likely the aspect ration Youtube used.

    2. There's a selection button under the video for 360p or 480p.

    3. I don't think there's a way in Youtube to select either letterboxing or cropping the video.

    I hope this helps.

  • HEEEY!! THAT WAS OUR TSUNAMI ¬¬

  • ha thats a surface wind

  • Well you did manage to capture the ICBMs at the .56 mark.

  • uhh guys thats a wind gust, sorry to dissapoint.

  • Very scientific! I like droll humour!

  • @MindCrazedBanjo Tsunamis don't destroy from wave height, it's by volume. Tsunamis aren't huge waves, more of a big shove in the ocean. What small waves you see in a tsunami is a just the crest of the ice berg that is the moving water, although what happened in san diego was pretty minimal.

  • at least my friends okay

  • zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  • thats just wind on the water
