When you are crossing a river a lift is definitely an advantage because it allows water to pass under your truck instead of banging on the sidewalls.
Better ground clearance comes mostly from the larger tires and a small increase in tire size can usually be accommodated without any lift. A little sheet metal cutting is often enough. If the thought of cutting your "precious" sheet metal is a little bit painful -- get over it!
