  • what did you mix with the clay?

  • @MawMati I have changed from using Satanite to Rutland High Heat Mortar mix it comes premixed all you have to do is thin it down with water. it works better than satanite in my opinion. If you have an Ace hardware close by, then you are set as this is where I get it from.

  • @smithforge where can I purchase your swords?

  • @NumeralKillerlive

I do custom commission work, so if you want to buy one of my swords, then we would sit down via email and talk about what you want. And the cost involved. I do have a a Katana for sale currently if you want to talk about it.

  • What metal do you use? is it folded? Do you forge the metal?

  • hahaha shit the sound of tht scraching kills me

  • this video is cool and everything, and very informative, but there is something that annoys me and it always does annoy me o.o it just annoys me when people miss pronounce japanese words >.> but besides my ranting about miss pronounced words, this video was an extremely great one!

  • that Mortar mix is that the stuff you put on a fire place?

  • So you're saying the clay has to be spread on thin?

  • @smithforge why not leave the edge clean? i notice you put a thin layer on it but i thought the clay was to keep the spine flexible and the edge hard. so why not just put clay on the back and the little lines on the edge?

  • @smithforge, thank you

  • what kind of clay do you use?

  • mix of clay that you put into the leaf?

  • This process it done once and it is before heat treat as the clay will insulate the blade and allow the edge to harden all at the same time, which is how the curve comes about.

  • @smithforge

o.k I see, now is this done on the final forge or is it done multiple time throughout the porcess?

  • Adding clay to a blade is a Japanese thing it is a way of hardening the edge and leaving the spine soft and ductile.

  • I have a question, I wanted to know what is the purpose of adding the clay to the blade?

I'v been wanting to learn how to forge swords but I'v never seen this done on other video's I'v watched

  • You may need to explain your process to me, like how much clay do you put on your blade, and where do you put the clay. Feel free to send me some pictures of your blade. Contact me via email

  • when put a full layer over the blade my steel always comes out soft and blue am i not geting my steel hot?

  • Excellent videos on sword making. I'm inspired and I found this information VERY helpful. Keep up the great work on spreading these skills all martial artists and enthusiasts should work towards.

  • What an informative explanation !.really helpful..

..but i dont think i can find satanite in my area,by your experience, can i use a pottery clay or natural clay instead?(which i can easily find in my backyard)..

BTW,I can hear a bird sound in most of your video..is it a crow? I can feel a peaceful environment in your place..have fun!

  • Thanks. And I have just finished forging a Ko - Katana it has a 25" nagasa and is just over 1/4" at the Mune-Machi and is just wider then 1 3/8" at the Ha-machi which gives me room to work down if need be. I will try to video some of my process with this blade as well.

  • Well sir I like to keep it simple. I use Satanite refactory clay, as it is a high temp mortar mix and works very well. I do add some charcoal to the mix. I know this is not traditional clay that the japanese use but as far as I am concearned it is as close as I can find.

  • Hello..very educative channel, i have watched your polishing waki with waterstone and a "big WOW" to the hamon..looks like a midare style hamon,it's so beautiful. I would like to know what is the right mixture of the clay? is it

    1. clay with ashes?

    2. clay with charcoal powder?

    3. clay, ash, whetstone?( i heard this long time ago)

    4. clay,ash,charcoal,whetstone? or

    5.clay alone?

    thanks for your time!..

  • Thanks dude
