Computers cant read minds yet, but researchers can already predict the mental patterns that occur when particular pictures are viewed. Theyre reliably able to tell what someone saw just by looking at brain activity.
You could argue that data mining is another type of mind reading. Its the process of reading collected data and making predictions based on it. Weve had data mining from the physical world for years in things like highway traffic cameras, home alarm systems, and manufacturing plant sensors. Reality mining, however, concerns personal data like internet searches or cell phone records.
The difference between scientists at MIT conduction research around cell phone use and Internet companies like Google, Microsoft and Yahoo collecting online information about people and using it for targeted advertising - is that MIT gets the participants permission.
Whether its our online searches or our cell phone records, data mining from social networking sites like MySpace and Facebook, or opt-in mobile presence trackers like Googles Dodgeball the underlying concern is about privacy. Should companies be allowed to collect and sell information about you without your permission?
Even if the programs are opt-in if people dont realize what their information is really being used for how can they make an informed decision?
Bull Crap! Some organization or government reads my mind and tortures me wirelessly IT IS NOT DATA MINING! THEY STAEL MY FREAKING THOUGHTS THEY KNOW THINGS ABOUT ME I DON'T EVEN REMEMBER TILL THEY REMIND ME WITH A PICTURE ONLINE OR ON THE TV. THEY CAN GET INTO ANYTHING THAN RUNS ON ELECTRICITY INCLUDING THE HUMAN BRAIN. I THINK THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE TOYOTO CAR CRASHES WHERE THE CARS WERE MYSTERIOUSLY ACCELERATING OUT OF CONTROL KILLING THE OCCUPANTS. I AM NOT JOKING! PLEASE WATCH MY VIDS!
