First-year students in the Stealing in Music City seminar at Vanderbilt University devised a workable system for distributing music that delivers content for a reasonable price and allows songwriters, artists and other stakeholders to get paid.
Three teams present their proposals for a fair model of music distribution to compensate artists, consumers and labels on Tuesday, Dec. 2.
Prior to developing their proposals, the students learned about the finer aspects of copyright and intellectual property law, and heard from a wealth of experts, including singers, songwriters, lawyers and label executives drawn from Nashville's famed Music Row.
Problem is, if the major record companies are in the mix, you can bet the balance in royalties will be upset, and artists won't be paid as much as they should.
