Nolan Ryan - The Greatest Pitcher in Anaheim!
-
im named after him

Nolan Ryan is a very good pitcher and also an excellent role model. However, I don't think he is in the top 10 for a pitcher you would want for game 7 of the World Series or the #1 pitcher you would want to sign. The positives we all know. The negatives: Poor fielder (he give up a lot of unearned runs some his errors compared to others) many stolen bases and of course the walks and wild pitches. For his long career he gave up a half run less then average very good but not great.

his fastest ball was 108
-
he throw alot of pitches and punches

@modeo92 I remember the few times I saw Pedro and never thought about how dominating he truly was in baseball in that period because I was too fixed in and focused on the yankees "best team ever" mini dynasty from the late 90's thru the early 00's. But like you,I never gave martinez his credit and damn! He'd be my second starter on the all time list!(next to Sandy)

@modeo92 I still think Koufax gets the greatest in a 5 yr stint. He was remarkable and today would have been very marketable,he wouldnt have thrown his arm out either. But would that have been detrimental to his amazing stats!? Maybe BECAUSE he threw so intense gave him those stellar, second to none, pitching numbers in modern baseball. But Ryan was the greatest on more occasions then any other pitcher in history.7 no hitters speaks for itself!

@fadethetrade One more thing. I don't rule out ERAs or think they're unimportant. I just thought Ryan would have great games followed by mediocre ones. So his ERA could be misleading. But then I managed to find though searching "nolan ryan (year) pitching game by game logs" most of his years, start by start (yes, I have way too much free time). It's really tough to make any blanket statement about him and his teams. There too many things to get into here, but it's worth checking out.
Ryan had one of the most wicked curve balls in MLB history. He threw it right at your head and it would break over the plate at your knees...not to mention it was traveling 88-91 mph!!! I can't remember how many batters I saw bail out of the batter's box thinking the ball was coming at their face and then hear the ump call a strike. Then they would have a look of utter incomprehension....classic
