Here's the classic late 1920s Annette Hanshaw hit, performed in 1999 by the Royal Society Jazz Orchestra (www.RSJO.com).

The first segment is vocalist Jeff Gilbert during the break, fooling around and doing a Hawai'ian number for my brother Hugh, who lives on da Big Island (he appears at left).

When the band gets going, it's bandleader Don Neely who sings and plays clarinet and steals the show.

Andrew Storar, trumpet.

I had to tweak the visual contrast, so that Youtube's compression will present the bandmember's faces.

Presented with permission from Don Neely and the Royal Society Jazz Orchestra.

  • gassyoldman: "Princess Pupule" was what we call a hapa-haole song, meaning a Hawaiian song created by mainland 'haoles' (Europeans). Hapa means "half" in Hawaiian. You'll find a rich tradition in our American songbook of songs like these. "Loveable & Sweet" is appended to this and is not part of the first song. It was a late '20s dance number, a teenybopper song like what Herman's Hermits did in the '60s. Annette Hanshaw, almost forgotten today, was the teen idol who sang it. She's on Youtube.

  • Agradables personas! Debe ser bonito compartir en un medio tan distinguido como es el de una gran orquesta de Jazz! La música muy agradable y alegre, Bob. 5*****

  • Like to see you utilize the transition effects between the different scenes! The band is pretty good! Great song!

  • Very cool

  • They are wonderful! I am transported back to the 20's. Thank you so much for introducing me to them. :) Oh, I am really in the mood to dance!

  • BlitzWing00: You still awake? Welcome to the Insomnia Squad! Delighted that you enjoyed it. I have another number I've been preparing to upload, but something crashed and I have to start over. I continue to use material from this same concert, but I have even better stuff from this band, filmed on other occasions, if only I can find the tapes (we painted our home interior recently and still have a lot of stuff in the garage). Thanks as always!
