The story of a successful graphic novelist who loses his hand because his wife is an idiot. Obviously they can't find the hand after the accident so it comes to life and starts killing everybody. Your typical plot for a great horror movie. Michael Caine even gets choked unconscious by his severed and unstoppable hand, which leads to a stay in the loony bin.
@Godzilla52 Maybe 'the hand' was his therapeutic way of dealing with his own neurosis.

Oliver Stone can be a very uneven director, he can direct great films and write some great screenplays like Scarface and the first Walstreet but he's made a bunch of bad a mediocre films as well, his walstreet sequel was a mess.

Psychological film with freudian concept. He literally choped/cut off his shadow (hand) instead integrated/accepted as part of his persona. The hand is symbol for inferior parts of him self, like sexual instincts, jealousy, wrath and vengeance. He tried to separate it from conscious and lock it in black dungeon called subconscious. But with supression he actually just gave real power to demons inside him, so they possessed him, the hand acted like independent entity with own destructive will.
