We all are familiar with crystals from rock collections or small molecules, such as salt or sugar. Richard Garriott carried an experiment that grew protein crystals in the microgravity in space. Protein crystals are very fragile, soft and sensitive to all kind of environmental variations. For reasons that are not totally clear, protein crystals often will grow larger and with much better internal order in space. Many diseases involve proteins. Once the structure of a particular protein is known, it becomes much easier to think about how one might block its activity in the human body. Scientists study protein crystals grown in space to help understand their structure.

  • The sad thing is, look at the numbers of views -- it really shows you the interest in space/astronauts these days. Man what a 180 from the 1960s.

  • People just don't understand the importance.
