    Ah, but that is the biggest trick in the movie. De Niro DOESN'T play Satan, but Lucifer, which in latin means"the illuminated one"... ie. Satan never makes an appearance (as he's just a spirit). Who IS making the appearance is the original Johnny Angel, whom Johnny Favorite killed in the ceremony. Satan is (to me) allowing the real JA to exact revenge for an unnatural death.. the beard and fingernails are to disguise the fact that the murder victim is hiring JF to find himself.

    movie gets me i wouldnt watch this with any kids around because it will freak anybody out. He is pretty much in his own little hell which you figure out towards the end some scenes are exremely eerie which make it one of my favorites
