"I See the Earth and it is Beautiful"
8:30 PM YNBA08 Main Stage and S.T.E.A.M. SCREEN
NASA Ames Research Center
(8:22 PM - International Space Station appears low in the Northwest sky over Yuri's Night Bay Area, rising to about 55 degrees, more than halfway to the zenith above the Northeast horizon at 8:25, shining at magnitude -2.2, plenty bright to see. It then arcs down to fade from view low in the Southeast sky at about 8:27)
Commander Peggy Whitson and Crewmember Garrett Reisman - 16th Expedition of the International Space Station
A cosmic Antiphony, created by the Deep Space Signaling Group at the STUDIO for Creative Inquiry at Carnegie Mellon University. Produced in collaboration with the Yuri's Night Bay Area Production Team, Golden Star Productions and the Zero Gravity Arts Consortium. The connection to the International Space Station was facilitated through the efforts of NASA Ames Research Center.
The words of this sound composition with visual components were first uttered by Yuri Gagarin, the Soviet cosmonaut who in 1960 became the first human in space. For this composition and collaboration, Peggy Whitson, Commander of the 16th Expedition of the International Space Station along with crew member Garrett Reisman will speak the words Yuri spoke along with a message, from the International Space Station, sent direct from the astronauts to Yuri's Night Bay Area 2008 audiences. Then, Gagarin's words will be recited again in various languages in the sound composition.
STUDIO fellows Lowry Burgess and Franco Sciannameo and associate fellows Andrew Kaiser, Jonathan Minard and Frank Pietronigro will unveil "I See the Earth and It Is Beautiful" at Yuri's Night (http://bayarea.yurisnight.net/2008), an art, science and music celebration in the San Francisco Bay Area. The Deep Space Signaling Group at the STUDIO for Creative Inquiry at Carnegie Mellon was formed in January 2008 and is comprised of the five STUDIO artists and Vashti Germaine, a musician and artist. The visual components were edited by Celestine Star of Golden Star Productions with Frank Pietronigro supporting as Art Director.
Frank Pietronigro, one of the team collaborators, states, "I believe that 'I See the Earth and It Is Beautiful' is a historic international Arts, Humanities, Culture and Space Science collaboration between artists, musicians, performers and astronauts aboard the International Space Station.
