December 2006
Until recently, few people took up the challenge of walking the Kokoda Trail in PNG. But a spate of books popularising the trek has inspired thousands. Can the track survive its newfound popularity?

The Kokoda Trail was the site of a major battle in WWII. With numerous books now publicising Kokoda as the 'Forgotten Gallipoli', numerous tourists are flocking to the site. Elders are grateful for the revenue trekkers bring to the area. As Saii Faole says; "We are happy." But villagers often find their meagre facilities overwhelmed by the hordes of tourists.
