Notes from The Monaghan with Jay Finnern

This website is dedicated to my neighbor Jay Finnern and his fellow shipmates that served on the USS Monaghan during WW2. Jay served in almost every major engagement in the Pacific war. I went to his house in July 2010 to gain some more perspective on his incredible story. I have posted interview clips that I recorded with Jay in July 2010 and posted photos and clips to go along with his commentary.

The USS Monaghan (DD-354) "The Fabled Ship" was a Farragut Class Destroyer in World War II. The Monaghan a.ka. "The Greyhound of the Deep" was present during the Pearl Harbor raid in 1941,participated in the 5 day Battle of the Coral Sea and the Battle of Midway in 1942, hunted submarines in The Aleutians and spearheaded the attack in Operation Hailstone at Truk Island. The Monahan was eventually sunk in a typhoon east of the Philippines in 1944 with all hands on board. There were only six survivors.

This collection of .mp3 clips and videos is from my interview with Julius "Jay" Finnern, one of the last of the Tin Can sailors.

The USS Moghnahan earned 12 battle stars.
