love me some self-replication

Actually, if you replace the extruder with a dremel or other high powered spindle, the Mendel is capable of milling out its own metal parts. It's even capable of milling out its own circuit boards. These machines, given enough raw material, can make a large majority of their own parts, which is no laughing matter.

The first airplanes didn't fly at supersonic speeds. We'll get there. It's important to stay pragmatic since if the goal is self replication we'd better have hundreds of 60% printed kits than zero fully printed kits.
