The Southern Alternatives Agricultural Cooperative (SAAC) is a pecan cooperative in southwest Georgia that produces shelled pecans and pecan candies for sale through fair trade. SAAC is the only African American-owned pecan shelling facility in the United States - and it is run by women. The women who lead this cooperative are lifelong advocates who are determined to run a pecan-processing plant in a way that creates new business and jobs for workers, while strengthening local economies in southwest Georgia.

  • It looks like some of the facts in this video aren't quite accurate. The building described and depicted as Smithville's "City Hall" is in fact the Lee County, GA courthouse. There are other glaring inaccuracies and outright fallacies, but I'll just leave it at that, as I'm quite sure that the persons responsible for misrepresentation are well aware of it. This is not the first instance of such coming from this group.

  • Cooperatives are the best way for the people that the system leaves behind to take controlof their lives, I think. Good on these people for taking the initiative.

  • I would like to buy these pecans. We need more groups like this. I would request that they be carried at whole foods if I knew what to ask for.
